CHAPTER 57

“What kind of information?” Jane said.

“Recent,” Irons said and sat up in his seat. “Whatever I could find out about you.”

“Why recent?”

“Because the man who hired me already knows about your past.”

“How’s he know?”

“He used to work with you.”

“What’s his name?”

“Drake Grimes.”

Drake was a former DSA agent. He had been the operations director at the Miami field office.

Two years ago his wife had been killed when terrorists had hijacked her plane. They had slit her throat.

Her death had shattered him. He had gone crazy. Literally. He had been involuntarily committed to a mental institution.

Within three months he had escaped. He had found and killed the terrorists. He had slit their throats. Then he had gone to ground.

That had been a year ago.

Since then intelligence and law-enforcement agencies had been looking for him. But none had found him.

No surprise. He was well trained. He knew how to hide.

He had been one of the best DSA agents. He had exceptional skills. Very exceptional.

“Grimes? Why’s he want information on me?”

“I don’t know. I didn’t ask. I just do what I’m paid to do.”

“So what’d you find out about me?”

“Who you see. What you do. Where you go. When you go.”

“How long have you been gathering the information?”

“Three weeks.”

“How’d he contact you?”

“Just showed up at my apartment. That’s what he used to do when I was a DSA informant.”

“So he’s in Miami.”

“He was three weeks ago. I don’t know where he is now.”

“When’d you last talk to him?”

“Three weeks ago.”

“Have his phone number?”

“No.”

“I’ll check your phone later. See if you’re telling the truth.”

“Be my guest.”

“How’d he pay you?”

“In cash.”

“So no money trail.”

“No money trail.”

“He escaped a mental institution last year. Intelligence and law-enforcement agencies are looking for him.”

“I know.”

“Then why didn’t you report him?”

“Because I’m not a government informant anymore. I’ve moved on to more lucrative work.”

Like working for terrorists.

Jane now thought Drake was the mastermind behind all three terrorist attacks in Miami today. He had been Badawi’s superior and Badawi had been one of the terrorists. Drake had recently been in Miami and still could be. He knew a lot about terrorism because he had fought it for years.

His mental breakdown had changed him. He had hated terrorists and now he was one.

No point in trying to figure out why. Insanity had no rationale.

No doubt he wanted information on her just in case she tried to stop him. He knew she was capable and he wanted some leverage over her.

He would get none. Irons would be detained until Drake was stopped. His information on her would go nowhere.

But she would still take precautions. Drake knew she had a son. She would send her son out of town today. Somewhere safe. Away from Drake. Away from a city in the crosshairs.

“Why didn’t he just meet you himself today? You could have given him the information directly instead of through Badawi.”

“I don’t know. He set this up three weeks ago. Maybe he knew he wouldn’t be in town today.”

Or maybe Drake had known he would be otherwise occupied with more important terrorist activities in Miami today.
